When I found out I was pregnant 7 months after getting married, let’s just say my jaw dropped! I was overwhelmed with the thoughts of finishing school, actually pushing out a baby, and then ummmm… BEING A MOM TO A SMALL HUMAN BEING THAT I HAD TO KEEP ALIVE!
I was freaking out and had no idea how I was going to make this happen on my Chick-Fil-A salary and my husbands Youth Ministry job.
How was I going to finish college, and have the beautiful 9-5 job that I had dreamed of being the CEO of? (**cough, cough Disney CEO cough, cough**)
I dabbled in several things for a while. I was a photographer, I taught Sign Language (my first love), and then I got desperate after our second little one and applied for remote jobs at tech companies.
I had been working on my own blog for my Sign Language business and had learned a few things here and there so I was like, “Why not? The worst they can say is no!” But you know what? They said yes! I thought it was a crazy dream when I got hired on at ConvertKit, and I started learning REALLY fast because there were wonderful creators depending on me!
As I worked more and more, I realized there were other mamas out in the world who needed to have this same amazing opportunity and just needed to learn the skills in order to be hired at these amazing remote companies!
So if that is not reason enough to get on the amazing, wonderful, freeing adventure of working remotely for a company here are 5 more!
You will be more marketable as an employee
Whether you work in an office now or want to in the future, knowing the ins and outs of technology will help you to get the promotion you are looking for or land the job of your dreams. By understanding technology and thus being a “techy” you are already ahead of many people in the job market and companies are looking to move in the direction of technology and having a strong online presence.
You can work from home or anywhere!
Do you have little ones at home that you would like to be home with and not have to worry about a steady income? Do you want to travel the world? You can do either of these things or even both with coding. Think about being at the beach and working from your hammock with no worry about running into the office. This may seem like a dream, but it is many people’s reality like my friends
You can create the “next best thing” and change the world
Coding doesn’t have to be just to create websites and games, it can also change the way we work and look at the world around us. There are countless amounts of people who have done this, however, there are a few outstanding ones.
British-American computer scientist Stephen Wolfram created the database where your favorite assistant, like Siri or Alexa, get all of the information that you ask for. Wolfram Mathematica is a cross-platform computational software that makes dreams come true, like telling me the time of fireworks at Disneyland. 🙂
One other fantastic creation is known as Photoshop. I’m sure you have heard of it because it has become a household name since its release in 1990 by John and Thomas Knoll. The best part about this story though, is that the market at the time was saturated with photo editing, but the Knoll brothers started creating anyways and ended up beating out the competition with a program that was easier and more fun to use!
You may be thinking, “Ya right! How am I supposed to come up with something that will change the world?” You were put here for a reason and maybe that reason is to come up with a way to solve the childcare issues of our time or make education more accessible to people in a third world country. Technology is the easiest and fastest growing way to do just that.
What experience or connections do you have that could make something amazing happen? Maybe just staying at home to hear how your kids day was after school would be enough to save their life. Maybe you can coach someone to be the best they can be and in turn live your passion. How will you know until you try? You just may fall in love. <3
